Origin Story

O

I’ve never liked the term Leader, not as it’s applied in the tech industry.

At many companies, employees fall into one of two categories. You’re either a Leader or you’re a Contributor (often shortened to IC for Individual Contributor). As you would imagine, the Leaders consist of upper level employees, directors and the like, while Contributors usually cap out with titles like Senior so-and-so. It has never made sense to me that rising to a certain level of promotion earned you the label of Leader. Call it a deep-rooted skepticism about job titles and labels that comes from years of learning that hard way that rank, authority, and leadership are very different things.

If you agree, you’ll like what I write about here. If not, I hope you give me a chance anyway.

Thanks for stopping by.
